Framestudio has designed Poolhouse, a modern extension to a traditional home, for their clients immersed in the technological environment of Silicon Valley. Located in Los Altos, California, USA the extension is created as a swim spa and home gym. The floor area of Silicon Valley Poolhouse completed in mid-2016 is approximately 540ft² (50m²).
Our solution is inspired by modernist extensions to centuries-old historic buildings in Europe. We created a dramatic angular glass volume, which we clad in weathered cedar, playing off the imagery of yard fences commonly found in suburban North America.
The cedar vertical siding served a dual function: as a rainscreen cladding system and as a privacy screen over the windows facing the neighboring residence. The horizontal window that looks out at the street was specifically designed to be at the clients eye level when exercising on a treadmill.
