Narrow House by FORM studio

Located in Covent Garden, London, United Kingdom this tall terraced late 19th-century townhouse is renovated by FORM studio. The Narrow House was commended in the 2016 Sunday Times British Homes Awards. Loose furniture & soft furnishings by interior designer Elizabeth Bowman.

The narrow deep plan of this tall terraced late 19th century building was ill-suited for its previous use as offices. We therefore recommended a change of use to our developer client, and Planning Permission was granted, contrary to local policy, for the creation of a luxurious 4-bedroom town house.

Subtle changes to the section of the building have created external spaces and allowed natural light to penetrate deep into the plan. A soaring 6m double-height kitchen/dining space opens onto a small new ground floor courtyard, whilst at the top an additional split-level studio floor has been added with terraces front and rear. Redundant storage spaces have been given new life as a state-of-the-art cinema and gym.

Fastidious detailing and a limited palette of high quality materials, together with a fire-engineered approach to layout (removing the necessity for lobbies), have helped to create a calm restful interior with good spatial flow between the 6 floors of accommodation.
