The Hive is a whimsical guest house in Austin, Texas, USA. The home, designed by Studio 512, covers 320ft² (30m²), and its living floor area is 550ft² (51m²).
The Hive’s design draws inspiration from Dutch and Japanese precedents – two cultures akin to designing buildings within spatial constraints.
Angled walls add volume according to the actions performed in each space — sitting, sleeping, standing — to yield a dynamic shape that feels both intimate and grand. Favorite details/materials include: reclaimed cedar shakes, charred wood flooring, exposed copper plumbing/towel warmer, built-in bed, floating shower bench and bath mirror, stucco walls, Colquitt inspired light fixtures, and reclaimed longleaf pine cabinetry.
