Holy Cross Residence located in Montreal, Canada. Designed by Thomas Balaban.
Located in Montreal’s up and coming Southwest neighborhood this new house for a couple of design enthusiasts hides a rich spatial complexity behind its tough working class façade. Built on a narrow, dark lot the house addresses concerns about maintaining privacy without diminishing exposure to natural light. By turning inwards and flipping the traditional house upside down, we placed bedrooms on the shaded lower levels and the living spaces upstairs, maximizing access to direct sunlight where it is needed most.
The project garnered a 2014 Québec Grand Prix du Design (Residential space 1 600 – 3 200 sq ft category).
